The purpose of National Disability Employment Awareness Month is to educate about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America’s workers with disabilities.
Declared in 1945 by Congress and held annually, National Disability Employment Awareness Month is led by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy, but the true spirit lies in the many men and women with disabilities who are working and with their employers. Each day, employees with disabilities overcome challenges to engage in the task of working; something that many of us take for granted. There are also many employers who have eliminated barriers to employment for people with disabilities. Today we celebrate your accomplishments and remember there’s still work to be done and our advocacy is not over.
